I have to admit there are times when I just want to knock people upside their heads – hoping it will knock some sense into them! Yes! That vulnerable, and yucky-prideful, truth I just shared bounces around inside my head at times. By God’s good grace I haven’t, yet, carried through on those thoughts!

Instead, I have learned (and God keeps me in His continual remediation lessons!) that I must invite God to, first, knock me upside my own fool head with His far wiser, far kinder, more balanced and more loving plan of action, reaction and interaction. And, oh! It is always so much better when we do things God’s ways! So much better for ourselves and for all others involved! Instead of knocking someone else upside the head out of my own frustration and pride, I’m called to take God’s Word to heart – and into my head – and choose His ways in all situations. Always.

But you, keep your head in all situations… – 2 Timothy 4:5

In Christ, and through His Spirit, we are given deep and unfailing gifts of love, wisdom, grace, truth, peace, patience, maturity and compassion. These gifts are able to empower us to choose God’s eternal perspective and remain calm and thoughtful, humble and strong even in the midst of the most difficult situations.

Right in the midst of a sudden crisis.

Right in the midst of facing cruel misjudgment.

Right in the midst of harsh and unjustified confrontation.

Right in the midst of devastating news.

Right in the midst of watching those we care about continue to make sinful, stubborn, hurtful and harmful choices that deeply affect themselves and others in their lives.

Our God calls us to keep our heads in all situations. And the very best way – the only way – for us to do this is to actively and intentionally (and with a lot of deep, calming breaths!) choose to “keep in step with the Spirit!” (Galatians 5:25)
