God’s Love-Watch!

God is actively watching us. And that is a very good thing. However, I know some of us have a hard time not imagining God as playing some sort of cosmic game of Whack-A-Mole with a big hammer in His hand and His eyes moving all over, watching every detail of our lives, ready to bring down a mighty blow on our heads the minute we pop out of our hole!

Our God is watching us! But! His purpose, for those of us whose lives belong to Him, is to strengthen our hearts. And that is a very good thing.

For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him. – 2 Chronicles 16:9

Our God does a Love-Watch over us. Our God watches us, His people, to strengthen our hearts. Not to crush us. Not to bruise us. Not to break us. Not to smack us down. God watches us to strengthen us.

Our God sees our hearts. He sees clearly the places where we are hurting or confused, struggling or disappointed, frustrated or burned out, angry or sad. And our God comforts us intimately and powerfully, giving us His strength for our hearts.

And our God also sees our sin. Far more clearly than we do. God will confront us and correct us when He sees we are doing wrong. Yet! This, too, is for the purpose of strengthening our hearts. Sin weakens us. Twists us. Hardens us. Destroys us. God’s choice to intervene and interrupt us with His grace and truth, right in the midst of our sins, is for the holy purpose of purifying us – which always strengthens us.

Both God’s comfort and correction come purely from God’s intimate love for us and His desire to strengthen our hearts. Our God wants all of His people to be strong. Really, really strong. We are under God’s Love-Watch. And that is a very good thing.

Would our husbands, wives, children, sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, boyfriends, girlfriends, close friends say they are under our Love-Watch? Do those who are “our people” sense that our eyes are watching them to strengthen their hearts? To encourage them? To guide them in God’s loving, best ways? To give them comfort? To give them understanding and compassion? Or do our watchful eyes – and our subsequent words and actions – hurt them and weaken them? Put them on the defensive? Do we shut them down or help bring them out? Do “our people” feel braver and stronger having been under our gaze? Or do they just want to run for cover because we’re playing Whack-A-Mole with their hearts?

As God’s people, let’s do life God’s way. Let’s purposefully choose to do a Love-Watch today. Let’s comfort, protect, encourage and strengthen the hearts of “our people.” I know God will be watching us, and our hearts will be strengthened as He does.
