Many of us have dealt with, or may be in the midst of dealing with, the far-reaching consequences of carrying excessive personal financial debt. At times this debt comes to us through no fault of our own but rather as the result of overwhelming personal crises in our lives such as unexpected unemployment, a flood, a fire, an accident, a severe and debilitating illness or a death of a family member. Or our debt may be the result of our own poor planning and the unwise financial decisions we’ve made. Either way, this debt can be a crushing and humiliating experience.
Our God cares so much about all the details of our lives, including our financial and material circumstances. God desires us to become wise stewards with all of our resources – whether they are meager or abundant.
Yet there is one debt that God desires us to keep as an outstanding account and carry it indefinitely, all the days of our life: the debt of loving others. This is the one account that we must never consider as paid in full, or even as possible to pay in full.
Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another… Romans 13:8
As believers and followers of Christ, we are His ambassadors, and in Him and by His Spirit we have been given unlimited, over-flowing resources to pay towards this debt of love into the lives of others. Our God is LOVE. And God calls each of us to share His love with others – actively, intentionally, constantly, practically, sincerely, sacrificially, humbly.
The Word of God clearly tells us that when it comes to loving one another, we must consider this as the one debt that will always remain outstanding. What Christ has done for us through the holy sacrifice of His life – for the forgiveness of our sins and the promise of eternal life – can never be repaid. Nor is it meant to be. Christ’s sacrifice is a pure gift of Love from our God and it is to be fully, freely received by us. Our response to this amazing Love from our Holy God ought to be to love others. Really love others.
The need for love in this world and in the lives of every person around us will always remain outstanding on this side of Heaven. So let us choose over and over again to pay towards our debt of love through the limitless resources of our God – who is LOVE. May God’s Love, Spirit and Power flow through us so that we may love on others in practical and spiritual, temporal and eternal ways! Today and every day of our lives.
