December 1–The Verdict Is Pronounced–And It Is Harsh

This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.

John 3:19-21

Pretty harsh verdict. But it’s God’s truth.

I have to admit that I can’t really handle (all that well) the people who shout out—whether from the pulpit of from a public corner—the verdict against evil in this world. But it’s only their style that makes me a bit uncomfortable. God’s judgment against sin doesn’t make me uncomfortable. It’s the truth.

But what does happen within me, when faced by God’s vedict against sin is this: I am ripped apart by God’s truth…and then put back together again by the blood of God’s grace. His light exposes every ugly and sinful, hateful and shameful thought, word, action and attitude. Coming into God’s light can be scary. But look at the Hands that are beckoning us to come into God’s light—they are nail-scarred, they are powerful and they offer freedom and salvation, forgiveness and transformation.

So, yes, God’s verdict against sin—against our human nature that would prefer to keep on sinning, prefer to stay in our dark world—is exceedingly harsh. And rightfully so, because the consequences of staying in our sins only bring death to us—maybe not immediately, but eternal darkness and separation from our God, who loves us so much, is our certain destiny.

God’s verdict agains sin—against our human love of the darkness—had God give over His One and Only Son to death to pay for our sins…because He loved the world…because God loved us, the darkness lovers, so much.

Are you living in the truth of Jesus Christ? Do you know His harsh verdict against sin? Do you care? Do you know the harsh punishment He suffered—death on a cross—out of His perfect and passionate love for you?

If you have accepted Jesus as your Savior, do you honor His sacrifice…or do you take it for granted? Are you living in the light of His truth? Or are you living in the shadowlands…thinking that the things you think, say and do aren’t really all that bad?

Please, think again. If we have to spend anytime justifying what we think, say and do—then I’m pretty sure they’re still shadowland behaviors. Jesus is not a God to be taken for granted. He cannot be mocked…He cannot be fooled. He is the truth. And Jesus, out of His love, wants all of His people—all of His precious, passionately loved children—to stop living a lie…to stop living in the dark when He has already given each of them the full light of life through His death and resurrection!

If you have never accepted Jesus before as your Savior, take time right now to talk to God, ask Him to reveal His light to your mind and your spirit. He will. Seek Him, admit that you have sin in your life and you need His forgiveness. Jesus Christ has already died for your sins. Ask Him to be your Savior. He will be. Jesus Christ has already conquered death through His resurrection. Ask Him to give you His promise of eternal life. He will give it.

And if you have just prayed—talked about this—with God. Welcome Home and Happy Birthday! Tell someone about your decision to ask Jesus to be your Savior! Celebrate that God has declared you as His child—a child who lives in His light and truth! And grow in the grace and truth of Jesus. Get to know Him and all the light and truth He pours out through His Word and His Spirit!

God’s verdict against darkness is harsh. God’s Light—our Lord Jesus Christ—offers truth and life! Come into the light! And stay there!

In love, peace and purposeful passion,                                                               Sylane
