The Sea of Galilee is 680 feet below sea level and surrounded by hills. Because of this, the winds blowing down from these hills to the sea can often cause surprising and dangerous storms. This was true on at least one occasion when Jesus and his disciples were in a boat, crossing from one side of the Sea of Galilee to the other.
A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” – Mark 4:39-41
Jesus has the power to quiet the fiercest storms and calm the most overwhelming of waves – in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual realms. Jesus is Lord of all. Yet, way too often, when chaotic storms and overwhelming waves come crashing into our lives – in the form of a relationship filled with pain and uncertainty, a body suffering with illness or a crippling disability, a death of a spouse or a child or a friend, the loss of a job or financial security – we fill our heads with all manner of worry, anxiety, fear, frustration, depression, self pity and anger at the unfairness and out-of-our-control of it all.
Too often we allow our own fear-fed thoughts to run rampant in our heads. And this is deadly. We need to be able to sincerely respond to the disciples’ question, “Who is this?” with a firm and faithful, “Jesus, You are the Sovereign Lord over all that exists! Jesus, You are the Prince of Peace!”
The wind and the waves obeyed Jesus when He said to them, “Quiet! Be Still!” For us, we are to not only obey Jesus when He speaks, “Quiet! Be Still!” to the storms causing havoc in our hearts and minds, we are also to trust Him to do for us – within us, through us, and even in spite of us – what we could not possibly do on our own. We are to receive the transcending peace of Jesus Christ that will guard our hearts and minds right in the midst of our mayhem.
Only then, when we trust and obey our Lord to allow His shalom, His peace to rule over us and in us, will our churning thoughts of chaos and crises, panic and pressure die down and be completely calm. Only then, when we trust and obey our Lord to allow His shalom, His peace to rule over us and in us, will we recognize and receive the power that our Prince of Peace has for us. At all times. In all circumstances.
So, shhhhh…Rest your heart, your mind, and your life in Jesus’ love and care for you.
Take some time with Jesus, even now, and choose to trust and obey Him and His words, spoken in full and eternal authority and unfailing love, over your most tumultuous thoughts and furious storms, “Quiet! Be Still!”
Jesus Christ is now and always in control.
