The LORD will surely comfort Zion and will look with compassion on all her ruins; He will make her deserts like Eden, her wastelands like the garden of the LORD. Joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the sound of singing. – Isaiah 51:3
This passage speaks of a time when the Lord’s great comfort and compassion for Zion – for the people of Zion – will be both historically and eternally realized. It will be a time when destruction will be completely transformed into abundant life and unfailing resources of beauty and nourishment. This is God’s ultimate fulfillment of His promise to His people – to those who are part of His true kingdom, to those who will be living with Him in the true and eternal Zion.
I can only barely begin to imagine the incredible, beautiful, holy and free from all sin, death and decay place to which our Lord will bring us home! When God’s promise is fulfilled in its entirety, we will know true joy and gladness! When God’s promise is fulfilled in its entirety, thanksgiving and singing will be heard! And I’m thinking there will probably be a bit of dancing going on, too!
Although we, as the redeemed people of God’s eternal Zion, must wait in hope for the fullness of God’s kingdom to be revealed, we need to remember that God’s comfort and compassion, renewal and transforming power are available to each of us – right here and right now on this side of heaven! The love of Jesus Christ, His eternal salvation and His powerful transformation should make all the difference in each of our lives right now.
God’s comfort and compassion, renewal and transforming power should radically change each one of us as individuals. God’s comfort and compassion, renewal and transforming power should radically change each and every one of us in every relationship we have and in every circumstance we experience in our lives.
In Jesus Christ we are given full hope, freedom and transformation!
What was condemned is now forgiven!
What was dead is now alive!
What was broken is now healed!
What was in bondage is now set free!
What was bitter is now sweet!
What was weak is now strong!
What was poor is now rich!
What was lost is now found!
What was dark is now light!
Yes, we do have to wait for the fullness of God’s eternal kingdom – His heavenly Zion – to be revealed. But! In the meantime, let’s celebrate that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ changes everything!
May we each invite and allow Jesus to change everything in us. Right now. And as we do, there will be joy and gladness within our hearts, and thanksgiving and singing will be heard! And I’m thinking there will probably be a bit of dancing going on, too!
