I am reminded of your sincere faith… – 2 Timothy 1:5
Sometimes we just need someone else to remind us of who we are in Christ. To remind us of the faith that we truly do have in our Lord Jesus Christ…and the faith that has been witnessed by others in the way we live our lives. These reminders of our sincere faith, that others have seen and experienced, can be powerful and timely encouragements to our souls.
Reaching out to others, encouraging them in the faith they have shown and lived out as they follow Christ, might be just what they need, right now. This acknowledgement and reminder of their faith can be such a loving and tangible way to bless our brothers and sisters in Christ – and bring glory to our God, who gives each of us the strength to live out our faith.
And maybe part of the encouragement, given to our brothers and sisters in Christ, is to help them to remember all they have received from God through their faith in Jesus. And what they have not been given!
For this reason I remind you to fan into flames the gift of God…For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. – 2 Timothy 1:6-7
Our God has given us amazing, unlimited resources – power, love, self-discipline and oh-so-much-more – within our spirits, by the gift of His Holy Spirit that we each received when we accepted Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord. All that our God has given to us, we are to fan into flames. God placed His Holy Spirit, His Holy Fire, within each of us as a follower of Christ. It is up to each of us to yield more and more – actively and intentionally – to the Spirit’s desire to purify us, consume us, and burn brightly within us and through us. And through God’s Spirit within our spirits, we are to reflect the likeness of Jesus to all those around us.
We need to remember who our God is and what the characteristics of His eternal nature are that have been placed within our spirits…and what have not been. Our God did not give any of us a spirit of timidity or fear, of pride or anger, of judgment or condescension, of selfishness or self-righteousness. Our God has instead given us His Spirit of power and filled us with all of the fruit of His Holy Spirit, His “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).
All that God has placed within us through His Spirit is always available to us at all times. It is for each of us to remember to purposefully and persistently fan into flames all that our God has given us. As we do, everything that comes from our old nature – our fears and pride, and anything else that would weaken and warp, damage and destroy our reflection and experience of Christ within us – will be fully burned away in the strength and brilliance of God’s Holy Fire!
Remember: Live out your faith in sincere ways! Encourage others whose sincere faith has blessed you! Fan into flames – day-by-day – all that the Spirit of God has placed within you to powerfully live out your faith in our Lord Jesus Christ! Encourage others to do the same!
