May 31

We have just spent the last few days reading through Psalm 23, a few verses at a time, and praying that our God will lead each of us to know what living the truth of His Word means for each of our days. Whether it is a day of sadness, surprises, simplicity or celebration.

Read Psalm 23, yet again, in its entirety, listening for God’s living and active truth in His holy and eternal Word.

The LORD is my shepherd, [I shall not be in want] I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he [restores] refreshes my soul. The LORD guides me [in paths of righteousness] along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley [of the shadow of death], I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Take time to listen, really listen, to God. Take time to hear and know the power of God’s grace and truth found here in Psalm 23. Take time to breathe deeply and be quiet before your Lord and Shepherd.

You see, God’s Word is not meant to be merely read or heard. No. God’s Word is living and active. And God’s Word is meant to be actively and intentionally lived out in each of our lives, for each of our days. Because we always need our Lord and Shepherd…

To lead us continually in His sovereign and intimate love.

To know and fulfill the deepest desires of our souls, the deepest wants of our hearts.

To show us where and how to rest fully and freely in the safety of His love.

To restore and refresh our souls with His tender care and beauty.

To guide us in His righteousness so we may shine with His likeness.

To walk with us here in the dark shadow lands of this broken world.

To calm our every fear with His loving and constant presence.

To comfort, correct and protect us by His gentle and strong ways.

To give us His lavish sustenance and full victory, right in the midst of our enemies.

To soothe us and honor us, set us apart and anoint us with His overflowing Spirit.

To follow us and pursue us, to attend to us and care for us passionately and persistently.

To assure us that He will bring us home to the fullness of His love and joy for all eternity.

May each of us live in and be led by the truth of God’s Word every day of our lives! Amen!
