We can often make things so much more difficult than they really are. So much more complicated than they need to be. Sadly, this thinking – that things are too difficult for us – can be especially pervasive when it comes to living out our lives as believers and followers of Jesus Christ. We forget, we ignore or we don’t really believe God’s beautiful Word of grace and truth that tells us clearly:
“…with God all things are possible.” – Matthew 19:26
Emphasis on with God. Not on our own. Not in our own strength. Not in our own wisdom. Not in our own righteousness. With God. All things are possible.
God tells us, just as He told His people wandering in the Sinai desert for forty years, that it is not too difficult to live out our faith relationship with Him. It is not too difficult to trust God. It is not too difficult to obey God.
Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach…No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it. – Deuteronomy 30:11, 14
God has not left us alone to live as His people in our own strength. Oh, no! That would be too difficult. Rather, our God, in His love and perfect provision, has given us the intimacy of His very present Holy Spirit and the power of His Word to surround us, fill us, strengthen us, heal us and transform us.
God may, and often does, take us out of our comfort zones in order to transform us more and more into the likeness of our Lord Jesus. Even as God does this, He is always, always very near to us offering His comfort. And in His presence and through His love and power, we are confident that nothing is too difficult.
God never said that our lives and our circumstances would always be easy. They’re not. But following God’s commands, that bring peace to our souls and hope to our lives, is not, and never will be, too difficult for us…with God. When we choose to remember that God declares His unfailing love for us and promises His constant presence with us, then following God’s commands is not too difficult for us. When we choose to speak God’s Word of grace and truth to ourselves so that God’s Word fills our minds and takes root in our hearts, then following God’s commands is not too difficult for us. When we choose to trust in God’s power rather than in our own strength and ability to obey our God, then following God’s commands is not too difficult for us.
God is near. God’s Word is near.
Let God’s Word flow from your mouth and fill your heart. Speak God’s Word of grace and truth, first, to yourself, and watch God prove that it is not too difficult to live out your faith, it is not too difficult to trust and obey God’s commands with God!
