Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the LORD. – Psalm 107:43
The author of this psalm asks us the readers – the people of God, the worshipers, the hearers, the singers – to heed the Lord’s words and ways and to ponder the loving deeds of the Lord.
Heeding these things would prove us wise. The entire psalm is encouraging us to praise the Lord our God for His incredible, unfailing love to us who call out to Him and trust Him. To acknowledge, and thank our Lord for the truth, that it is out of His great love for us that He hears and He answers our prayers. It is out of our Lord’s great love for us, and by His loving deeds worked on our behalf, that we are saved from our foes, rescued out of disaster and set free from oppression. And these things we should ponder.
It is wise to heed God’s words. It is wise for us as God’s people to heed the Lord’s call for righteousness in the way we live our lives. It is wise to place our full trust in our Lord alone.
It is wise to ponder the loving deeds of our Lord. It is wise for us as God’s people to give thanks and acknowledge and ponder who our Lord is and what our Lord has done for us. It is wise to remember, celebrate and ponder all of God’s saving, rescuing, loving-deed-doing ways in each of our lives.
Heeding the Lord’s words – following, and obeying His ways – brings us into a more intimate walk with our Lord, giving assurance to our souls of His sovereign and loving presence.
Yet, there have been far too many times in my life when I have foolishly chosen not to heed and follow the Lord. And I know there will be far too many more times (Darn it!) when I will choose to heed my own thoughts and ways rather than following and trusting my Lord. And in those times, I am left feeling foolish. And alone. Knowing I know better. Knowing God only wants the best for me. Knowing that heeding the Lord’s ways is always His very best for me. How foolish I can be.
Pondering the loving deeds of our Lord – meditating on, and calling to mind the loving ways He has worked in our lives – comforts and strengthens us, bringing peace and joy to our souls.
Yet, there have been too many times in my life when I have chosen to ponder over my problems and my predicaments rather than thinking of the truth of God’s unfailing love for me and His loving deeds already done in my life. Too many times I have focused on my frustrations and my fears rather than on trusting my Lord to work out His loving deeds and good plans for my life. And I am left feeling foolish. And helpless. Knowing I know better. Knowing the Lord’s love for me is more true and eternal than any of my temporal tempests. Knowing that the Lord’s loving deeds will triumph in the end. And it’s never the end until His love triumphs. How foolish I can be.
O Lord, let us be wise! May we each heed more fully and more quickly all of Your words and ways! May we each ponder more fully and more often all of Your loving deeds!
