As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children – with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts. – Psalm 103:13-18

Amazing. Who our God is, what our God’s character is, and the hope of eternity we have in our God’s love – in our Lord’s legacy of love – are so succinctly, clearly and beautifully expressed here.

Our God is the compassionate Father for all those who fear Him – for all those who trust Him. Oh! I know I need this compassion from my Heavenly Abba. We all do. Most of us have experienced times, maybe far too many times, when we have been dismissed or disheartened, disrespected or demeaned by another. Our God is the Lord of compassion. Love is who our God is (1 John 4:8). Loving compassion is what our God offers to His children continually.

Our God is the perfect and eternal One who knows each of us intimately and loves each of us compassionately in our mortal state – understanding how very frail and fleeting our lives on this earth are. We will each die to this earth. We will each die to all that is temporary. But this is not the end of life for those who fear and trust the Lord.

Our God declares that His love is from everlasting to everlasting. If God’s love for us is eternal – always present, never ending, transcending all time and space – then our God must transform us from our mortal state into our immortal state so that we may receive His promised love that is from everlasting to everlasting. Our God of love is our Lord Jesus Christ who declared Himself to be “the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25). For all those who fear and trust our God, we have been given the absolute assurance that our lives are eternal and will be set free from all that breaks and binds us on this earth. We will know the fullness of God’s love as we live for all eternity – from everlasting to everlasting – filled with, flowing with, and surrounded by God’s beautiful, holy, and loving presence.

Our God promises that He will give His righteousness to our children’s children as they, too, choose to fear and trust the Lord – as they, too, choose to keep God’s covenant and obey His commands. Our God’s compassionate, eternal love, His tender understanding of our frail and fleeting mortal life, and His gift of resurrecting righteousness – bestowed on all of us by faith – are newly and fully offered to each individual, to each of our children, in this generation and the next generation and the next…and the next…

Our God offers each of us His compassionate, powerful, life-transforming love and eternal righteousness – right now and for all eternity. This is our Lord’s legacy of love for all who will choose to fear and trust our God. Amazing.
