March 30

In a clear, strong voice. That’s how it began. That’s how God speaks. God spoke and all that exists came into being. The first recorded words of God, “Let there be light,” were spoken in a clear, strong voice. There was no confusion. God spoke and light sprang forth. Like God’s Word so, too, is God’s Light that breaks into our darkness. Clear and strong.

God speaks and things happen. Light and life are called into being. God speaks and, as David wrote, we may hear the voice of God’s creation telling us something of the glory and wonder of who God is and what God is able to do.

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.                     – Psalm 19:1-4

God’s creation seems to be constantly speaking to us, revealing to us that God is real, that God is present and that God is powerful. Creation speaks of a God of wonder that has an eye and a heart for beauty. Why beauty? Why Wonder? Because the God who gave us breath in the first place wants to get our attention by taking our breath away!

Will we hear what is being said? Will we take time to listen for God’s clear, strong voice? Oh, I know our lives are often busy and hassled. Our lives can be filled, even over-stuffed, with the needs and noises coming from other people, from our responsibilities at work, home and outside the home. We may not take time to listen for God’s clear, strong voice because we’re so intensely focused on listening to our own personal needs and the noises coming from inside our own heads. For some of us, our lives are seriously hurting with real physical, emotional and spiritual pain. We may feel trapped or crushed, unable to listen to anything beyond our own pain. Because of this, it is that much more important, with our hurried and hurting lives, to take time to listen to creation’s declaration of a God who speaks to us in a clear, strong voice.

When was the last time you slowed down enough to look at, to listen to, the morning sky or the evening sky? To listen to that little stream, or river, or lake, or ocean? Stopped to listen to the hills, the mountains, the valleys, the open fields? And for you more urban dwellers, when was the last time you listened to that tree and patch of pretty flowers planted right there on that busy, crowded, gum-sticking-to-your-shoes sidewalk? Stopped to listen to that cool evening breeze that came after a hot, humid, sweaty day in the city?

May we each choose to listen and believe that God is God and that God is speaking to us! God wants us to hear Him, and through hearing Him to know Him. God speaks through His creation, through His Scriptures and through His Spirit. And God speaks His ultimate revelation of Himself through His Son Jesus, the Word made flesh, in a clear, strong voice!
