But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. Jeremiah 17:7
This verse is so bottom-line basic to our faith. We are called to place our deepest, truest trust fully in our Lord who loves us eternally. We are called to place our deepest, truest confidence completely and only in the Lord our God as our Savior, our Strength, our Hope, our Peace and our Life.
When we allow ourselves to trust our God like that – taking God at His Word – believing that our God is who Scripture declares Him to be, we are empowered with a strong and peace-filled confidence. And this confidence in our Lord does not necessarily, or even very often, have to match the tangible, objective realities of the circumstances and the challenges that come into our lives.
Still, as we are held in this trusting, full-out confidence in our Lord, we are blessed. There we are held by our Lord’s love, hope and peace. There we are able to take a deep, soul-quieting breath. Even through our tears, confusions, hurts and frustrations.
Our deepest, truest confidence is not to be based on anything about ourselves. Our confidence is not to be found in our strength or our health, our intellect or our bank account, our talents or our education, our job or our social status, nor in any of our personal or professional relationships.
All of these tangible, objective realities in our lives can change in an instant. And if not in an instant – every one of them will change over time, in some way. Not one of them will last forever. And when these tangible, objective realities do change, if our confidence was found in them, we can be horribly changed and shaken to our very core.
Our God never changes. This truth makes all the difference for us now and for all eternity. The confidence that fills us and blesses us as we trust in our Lord is unchanging and unshakable. Oh, we will still be changed. We will still be shaken to our very core. But in amazing and eternal ways! As we put our full confidence in our Lord, in His love for us, in His constant presence with us and in His eternal and good purposes for our lives – even when we aren’t able to understand those purposes at the time – we are changed and shaken to be more and more like our Lord and Savior Jesus. Beautifully. Powerfully. Peacefully. Thankfully.
Trust and confidence in our Lord may seem absolutely outrageous at times.
The LORD is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident! – Psalm 27:3
May each of us be fully and outrageously blessed – in every circumstance and challenge of our lives – by an unchanging, unshakable confidence in our Lord!
In the love and peace, grace and truth of Jesus Christ, Sylane
