LORD, our LORD, how majestic is your name in all the earth! – Psalm 8:1

When I read these words from Scripture, one of the praise song tunes to which this passage was put to music goes through my head. It just makes me want to get up and start singing and dancing a little bit! It’s so upbeat, happy, hope-filled and powerful. I know and believe that the Lord’s name is majestic in all of the earth! It is true.

But it isn’t true. Not really. Not all the time. At least not for me. Not in the way I live out my life and make each of my moment-by-moment choices on this earth. Is the Lord’s name majestic to me? Yes. Most of the time. But there are still too many times when I think, speak and act as if I never knew the Lord’s name. During those times, I regard myself as the majestic one. Denying, in my own little corner of the earth – wherever that happens to be at the time – that the Lord’s name is majestic in all of the earth. So, no. It isn’t true that the Lord’s name is majestic in all of the earth. Because I, for one – as one of God’s created children of this earth – have far too often, in far too many ways, diminished and dismissed the Lord’s majestic name.

But it is true! God’s Spirit and God’s Word declare that the Lord’s name is majestic in all of the earth! God doesn’t change. And nothing I do or anyone else does – has done or will ever do – could possibly change the majestic name of the Lord! Not in this earthly temporal realm. Not in the eternal realm. Not ever. Not by our kindest, most compassionate, most loving ways. Not by our most selfish, most evil, most hateful ways. Neither our very best nor our very worst ways can change the unchangeable truth that the Lord’s name is majestic in all of the earth!

Our Lord’s name – after name after name – by which He has revealed Himself, is majestic!
