We hear so much about the need for good nutrition and regular exercise in order to be healthy and strong. We may hear all about it. We may even believe it. But! In order for good nutrition and regular exercise to do us any good, we still have to do something about it!
Within Scripture there are some great guidelines about being healthy as well. As a counselor and a minister of God’s Word for many years, I have witnessed the deeply interwoven connection between our spiritual health and that of our physical and mental health. This connection is absolutely incredible and undeniable. And it should not be ignored.
However, this is a broken world, and I want to make it clear that there is not always a perfect alignment with our spiritual health and our physical and mental health. I have known many individuals who have suffered from crippling and devastating illnesses and pain in their bodies and minds – none of which reveal the depth and breadth of their spiritual health and their intimate relationship with God. Likewise, I have known others whose physical strength and mental prowess reveal nothing of the dark and destitute state of their spiritual health and their non-existent relationship with God.
Choosing to live in a humble and teachable way before our God will always bring us greater spiritual health and bring us into a more mature, intimate relationship with our Lord. And, as God’s Word assures us, there is a deep connection between our spiritual health and our physical and mental well-being. When looking at issues that bring us ill health and physical and mental imbalance, we need to seriously consider and sincerely assess the state of our spiritual relationship with God. Our spiritual health can absolutely affect our whole body.
Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. – Proverbs 3:7-8
Do not let [Wisdom’s words] out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body. Proverbs 4:21-22
Light in a messenger’s eyes brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones. – Proverbs 15:30
But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves. – Malachi 4:2
We may hear about the spiritual-physical-mental health connection. We may even be avid believers of this connection. But! We still have to do something about it! May each of us choose to be humble and teachable before our God! It does a body – mind and spirit – good!
