Not too long ago we went through a few days in a row when the rain just kept pouring down. At times, the rainstorms took the power down. And we brought the candles out. The rain forced us to change a number of our plans for our usual summertime outdoors and at-the-shore activities. Some of us had to force ourselves not to let the grumpies take over our attitudes, words and actions. Not gonna mention any names!
I could almost sense God smiling, shaking His head at us and thinking:
Yes. It’s raining. It’s dark. It’s gloomy. And it’s not exactly what you wanted or expected this season to be like. So what? You’re still alive. And I am still God! (Don’t you love it when God just tells it like it is?!) You have so many reasons to be thankful! The rain shouldn’t make a difference. Focus on what is true, eternal, bright and beautiful always! I am still God! I love you! I am with you! I give you life and breath – and oh-so-much-more! I do not change. My loving, hope-filled purposes will still be accomplished even if your plans are subject to change!
And God’s Word – a fabulous, get-over-yourself-about-the-rain passage – filled my head and my heart:
“As the rain and snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace…” Isaiah 55:10-12
So, yes, it was raining a lot lately. So what?
God is still God. God’s desires and purposes will still be achieved and accomplished. And with God leading us, we can still go out in joy and be led forth in peace. No matter what desires of ours are denied. No matter what purposes of ours have to be put off.
This will happen for each of us every time we choose to keep our ears open to God’s purpose-accomplishing Word of love, grace and truth. This will happen for each of us every time we choose to keep our eyes open to the joy and peace that is around us and available to us every single day – even on the gloomiest of rain-drenched days!
Even on our gloomy days that have nothing to do with the weather, but rather have everything to do with the storms of life we experience, these truths are still true. God is still God. God is still in control. God still loves us. God’s desires and purposes, which are perfect and eternally the very best for us, will still be achieved and accomplished.
We might not have any choice about the rainy days and the storms of life we experience. However, we always have a choice about trusting our God, His Word, His desires and His purposes – and knowing that His joy and peace are always available to fill us and lead us! No matter what!
In the love and peace, grace and truth of Jesus Christ, Sylane
