What are you watching for? What are you looking for? An easier day? A promotion? A vacation? An encouragement? An achievement? An award? A quick answer? A plan that all comes together? A cure? A new relationship? A healed and renewed long-term relationship? An easier time with a cantankerous family member, boss, co-worker or neighbor? An easier life? All of the above?
What we watch for depends on where our eyes are focused – physically, emotionally, mentally, relationally and spiritually. What we watch for reflects what we expect to see and experience. God’s Word tells us, and His Spirit confirms it: We can watch for, and expect to see and experience, the mighty strength and unfailing love of God as our protective, enduring, non-destructible fortress!
You are my strength, I watch for you; you, God, are my fortress, [my loving God] my God on whom I can rely. – Psalm 59:9-10
Our God wants us to lift up our eyes and watch for Him – His love, His strength, His protection. And as we do, what we will see, more clearly and transformingly, is that our God is watching us with His eyes of love, grace and truth. Our God is – at every moment of every day – watching out for us, and watching over us! We just need to watch for our God!
I lift up my eyes to the [hills] mountains – where does my help come from?
My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip – he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The LORD watches over you – the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.
The LORD will keep you from all harm – he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and your going both now and forevermore. – Psalm 121
Even if we don’t fully understand God, or see things God’s way, the truth is that our God is always awake and watching over us as His precious, beloved children. May we each choose to trust God’s promises of love, strength, presence and protection and His watchful love over our lives. May we each choose to lift up our eyes and watch for – and expect – that our God will show up in powerful, help-bringing, peace-giving and loving ways!
