Sometimes some things are just not in our control. Okay! That really should say: Most of the time most things are not even close to being in our control! Good thing God is!

Oh! It’s those extra special reminders of how very much not in control we are that can either make us cry, make us angry or, hopefully more often, they can make us laugh out loud! Well, I have done a bit of all three over the years. Sometimes over very serious circumstances and sometimes over absolutely absurd circumstances. Either way, I have learned that my attitude and perspective are what matter most in every circumstance.

Let me share one of those extra special reminders – this one falls into the absolutely absurd category – of how very much not in control I am. A few years back, I ordered a lovely basket of delicious goodies for my daughter’s birthday. It was to be filled with gourmet cheeses and crackers, fabulous mustards, shortbread cookies, chocolate dipped cookies, French-twists, select teas, hot chocolates, coffees and (Oh, yes!) Godiva chocolates. The basket itself was a beautifully crafted masterpiece. And just to assure me the well-deserved title of Super Mom, I asked that a brightly colored Happy Birthday! balloon be attached to this fabulous feast in a basket! It was to be delivered to my daughter’s NYC office a little after 9:30 am on the morning of her birthday.

Sometimes some things are just not in our control. My extra special reminder of just how very much not in control I am looked like this: The basket arrived after 5 pm; there was no balloon; the fabulous feast in a basket consisted of some plastic wrapped American cheese, some yellow mustard and a can of sardines.

Let me assure you that my daughter was able to laugh much more quickly than I! She even gave me credit for being clever and funny by sending a very un-gourmet basket as a joke for her birthday! Now if that isn’t grace, I don’t know what is! But. No. I had other Super Mom intentions. It didn’t happen the way I planned it at all. And I just had to laugh.

Sometimes some things are just not in our control. Are you okay with that reality? Am I?

For the moment, I can say, “Yes!” This attitude is made by an intentional choice to intentionally believe the truth, the perspective that declares: God is in control. Now and always. God is in control when my life and my times are completely insane, absurd, annoying or confusing. God is in control when my life and my times are horribly shocking, sad, lonely, painful or scary. God is in control when my life and my times are powerfully effective, amazingly adventurous, magnificently sweet, fabulously easy or ridiculously funny.

My times are in your hands… – Psalm 31:15

God is in control at all times, in all places, in all circumstances.

And sometimes we just have to laugh! Sardines, anyone?

Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy! Psalm 126:2

In the love and peace, grace and truth of Jesus Christ,                                              Sylane
