Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.” – Hebrews 12:28-29
How much more humbly, honestly and intentionally our worship would flow from us if we were to truly step back, recognize, acknowledge and live in the truth that everything in our world – our homes, our jobs, our finances, our possessions and even our physical bodies – everything we know and experience in this tangible, temporal world can and will be shaken. Everything can and will pass away. None of these is eternal. Not one.
But! Our God is a consuming fire who, even as everything temporal is shaken and passes away, will give to us His eternal kingdom that can never be shaken. We will receive our God’s eternal kingdom that will never pass away. Our God’s eternal kingdom, which holds everything of true beauty and eternal value, will also hold each one of us who has put our faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, as our One and Only Eternal King!
That should shake us up and shake us out of offering to our Eternal God – our Creator, Mighty God, Wonderful Counselor, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, Redeemer, Deliverer, King of kings and Lord of lords – any form of worship that has become complacent, compromised, rote or weary. Our God’s kingdom cannot be shaken, nor can those who belong to Him!
So! Let’s get our worship on! Worship that is true and acceptable to our God who is a consuming fire! Worship that is thankful! Worship that steps into the throne room of our God’s grace with reverence and awe!
Let our worship shake our hearts to the very core with thankfulness!
Thankful for our God’s gift of life and breath, every new day, every single moment. Thankful for God’s unfailing, inseparable love and constant presence with us (Romans 8:39; Matthew 28:20).
Thankful for God’s Word that reveals the fullness of God’s grace and truth to us in living and active ways (John 1:14,17; Hebrews 4:12).
Thankful for “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing” (Ephesians 1:3).
Thankful for God’s Spirit who feeds us, fills us and flows through us with the life and mind-transforming “fruit of the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22-23).
Thankful for everyone, every experience, every circumstance, every season of life – the beautiful and the ugly, the pleasant and the painful, the righteous and the wicked – that God allows in our lives because “we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose”…“to be conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:28-29).
Let our true worship reach up to the heart of God as we reach out to the hearts of others with God’s unfailing, compassionate, forgiving, tender, strong and tangible love. This is the purest, most powerful form of worship we could ever offer to our God. Let our worship shake us up so that we will actively, intentionally, practically and continually love others with thankfulness. Love others with reverence and respect. Love others with awe because they, like we, are image bearers of the One True God, who is a consuming fire!
