When our little Julia was born (Okay, not so little since she was just under eleven pounds at birth!), her eyes were squeezed shut by her cute and very round, chubby cheeks. I had to gently pry her eyelids open so I could see her eyes and she could begin to see me. I opened Julia’s eyes lovingly and tenderly. My love for my new baby daughter was overwhelming. I just wanted that time of us seeing each other – even through her very unfocused, cheek closed-up, newborn eyes – to begin as soon as possible.
In the movie “Avatar” when the indigenous Na’vis people from the planet Pandora intimately understood and connected with the essence and nature – connected with the heart and soul – of another, they would declare, “I see you.” The eyes of their hearts were opened to another.
Our Holy God intimately understands and is connected to us as our Creator and Lord. God sees us, knows us and loves us beyond our comprehension. And God desires to open up the eyes of our hearts so that we may see Him, know Him, trust Him and love Him.
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. Ephesians 1:18-19
With Jesus as our Savior and Lord, we have been given a new life through Him as the Light of the world. Our Lord wants us to see – as His True Light opens and fills the eyes of our hearts – all the abundance of God’s love and goodness given to us. In Christ’s True Light, our hearts and our lives on every level, will be opened so that we may live as God’s people with a clear, eternal and purposeful calling, with an unlimited hope, with spiritual riches and resources beyond measure and overflowing with the Spirit’s power.
May we each invite God to gently, lovingly, tenderly (suddenly and strongly, if necessary) pry open the eyes of our hearts. May we choose to not stay blinded any longer in any way by any hardness or coldness or apathy filling our hearts. May we choose to not stay visually impaired because of our sins, doubts, fears, pride, hypocrisy, self-righteousness or judgment.
Lord, let us see You! Open the eyes of our hearts and move each of us to trust and love You more fully! Fill us and flow through us so that we may live and love with your True Light shining through our hearts into the lives of others who are still held captive by the darkness!
In the love and peace, grace and truth of Jesus Christ, Sylane
