Our God does things in big ways when it comes to His children! Right from creation, the Lord purposed that we would be made in God’s image. We were intended to resemble our God.

Sadly, our sin and pride, our self-centered and selfish choices damaged that likeness and separated us from our intended, intimate relationship with our Creator. But! That didn’t stop our God! Through Jesus – through His love, His humble life-sacrifice and His death-conquering resurrection – God’s purpose for us is able to be fulfilled in us as we choose to let God conform us more and more to the likeness of His Holy Son.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness…” So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. – Genesis 1:1, 26, 27

…to be conformed to the image of his Son… – Romans 8:29

My maiden name is Roberts. My dad comes from a large family in Mississippi, and although I’ve only seen some of my Southern relatives a few times in my life, they really are family. And ever since I was little, I’ve been told that I have “that Roberts look”.

Several years ago, my dad gave me an old photograph of my great-grandmother. It was startling how much I looked like her – someone I had never known nor even met. The striking family resemblance of our images was undeniable. She, though family, was a stranger to me.

What about my family resemblance to my Heavenly Father? It is God who made me. It is God who really knows me and has made Himself known to me through His Word, His Spirit and His love. It is my Heavenly Father who came for me in my brokenness, who saved me and comforted me and transformed me from being a child of abuse to being a child of the King of kings.

Do I look like God? Are people able to tell whose family I belong to because I have “that Jesus look”? Are God’s features, God’s characteristics – of love and compassion, grace and truth, wisdom and courage, peace and power – recognizable in me? I hope so. I pray so.

After all, that is God’s plan for me and for all of us as God’s children: To be conformed to think and speak, act and live and love more and more like His holy Son Jesus. God is still working His family resemblance transformation out in all of us. And He’s not going to stop on this side of heaven!

What a beautiful thing it will be when God welcomes us to our eternal home and we recognize all our family members – from every nation and generation since the creation of this world. Our family resemblance will be absolutely remarkable. We will all have “that Jesus look”!

In the love and peace, grace and truth of Jesus Christ,                                               Sylane
