The LORD will be the sure foundation for your times,

a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge;

the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure.

Isaiah 33:6

Things can seem so shaky and insecure in all of our lives at different times. Maybe your job or your finances are unstable or suddenly diminishing or gone. Maybe your relationship with your husband or your wife or your child or your friend is tense, confusing, painful or ending. Maybe your health is weakening, your prognosis is uncertain, complicated, devastating or terminal. At those times, do you have and know the Lord as your sure foundation? For all of your times? No matter what?

Things can seem so empty in all of our lives at different times. Maybe you feel that every personal resource you have of energy, hope, peace, strength, sustenance and survival are completely depleted. At those times do you have and know the unfailing, exceeding and abundant riches that come from the Lord? That come from our God’s eternal storehouse? That come from the Lord’s loving and merciful offer of salvation and wisdom and knowledge?

Our Lord makes known the key to His eternal treasures. Whether we’re feeling shaky and insecure or empty and depleted. The key to God’s treasures – for every circumstance, situation and relationship here on earth and which opens up eternity with our God – is to have the fear of the Lord.

Fear of the Lord. What does that truly mean for how we are to relate and respond to the Lord? I have come to understand it this way: An honest and deep sense of humility before the Lord. An acknowledgment that the Lord, and the Lord alone, is the Sovereign God, the Almighty Creator and the Eternal One. A profound, even trembling, reverence and respect for the Lord’s power and majesty as the omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent Lord over all of life, over all that exists in every realm we know and understand and in every realm that is far beyond our comprehension. An authentic embracing of the truth that our own individual life on this earth and our eternal life and destination are completely in the hands of the Lord. Fear the Lord!

And I believe there are two sides to this treasure key: Fear of the Lord and Trust in the Lord. Knowing who the Lord is should cause us to deeply fear Him. Our lives depend on Him alone.

For the LORD is your life

Deuteronomy 30:20

Knowing who the Lord is should cause us to fully trust Him with every breath of our lives, now and eternally, because the Lord alone loves us unfailingly.

I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.

Psalm 13:5

This two-sided key, fear of and trust in the Lord, opens our lives to the eternal treasures our Lord holds out for each us. The Lord will be our sure foundation. The Lord will generously pour out the riches of His salvation, wisdom and knowledge to all who fear and trust Him.

Do you know where you put your two-sided treasure key?
