Many children and adults across our nation, and throughout the world, are beginning a new school year during this season. From our littlest ones, whose eyes are big and hopeful, and wondering what being in school is all about, to our older ones, who may be learning a trade and gaining skills to build and create, fix and develop a variety of things, to those who may be long-term students in their final year of a doctoral program (maybe even completing their second or third doctorate degree) – all of them will have a beginning and an end to their formal educational programs.

Not so for us as children of God and followers of Christ. For us, school’s in forever. And it’s a beautiful, protective, life-guiding and life-transforming thing! As children of God and followers of Christ, we are to give ourselves over to our loving, teaching God – who wants to teach us His good ways, every single day of our lives.

Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things

your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live.

Teach them to your children and to their children after them.

Deuteronomy 4:9

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;

I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.

Psalm 32:8

You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees.

Psalm 119:68

Jesus said…”If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:31-32

Jesus said…”The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,

will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have said to you.”

John 14:26

All Scripture is God-breathed, and is useful for teaching,

rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…

2 Timothy 3:16

Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still;

teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning.

Proverbs 9:9

As children of God and followers of Christ, growing in the wisdom and knowledge of our Lord is meant to be an integral and continual part of our intimate and eternal relationship with our holy God. Unlike the song, “School’s Out,” made famous by rocker Alice Cooper (who I actually met in Stuttgart, Germany several years ago), for us, school’s in forever! And that’s a beautiful, protective, life-guiding and life-transforming thing! Teach on, God, teach on!

In love, peace and purposeful passion,
