February 7–Guard Your Heart!

Our hearts are so very important to God. He tells us to make guarding our hearts a top priority. That our hearts are the very wellspring of our lives.

If our hearts are this–Above All Else–so important to God, then, we need to seriously think about just how seriously we guard them.

Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23

Personal Reflections from Sylane:                                                                           What is God really talking about? Above ALL ELSE, guard my heart? My heart is the wellspring of my life?

The word heart in Scripture refers to far more than what we usually think about. In biblical language our heart is the very center of the human spirit from which all of our emotions, thoughts, motivations and actions flow.

From within our hearts flow the deepest motivations for how we set our course for living out our daily lives. From within our hearts all that we think, feel, say and do is formed and expressed.

How loving and wise of our God to tell us to guard our hearts so tenaciously! God wants our wellsprings well!

God’s word, then, to me is:

Guard your heart. Guard your emotions. Don’t allow frustration, sadness, anger, fear, pride, self-pity, exhaustion, hurt, excitement, boredom, numbness, stimulation…to have control over our hearts. The love and peace, grace and truth of Jesus should be the balancing, healing emotions that rule in and flow through our heart–our wellsprings.

Guard your heart. Guard your thoughts. Don’t allow for the intitial unhealthy emotions to be formed into well-rehearsed thoughts and imprisoning imaginations.  They can too easily become raging torrents–and full blown scenarios–that damage and destroy the life-giving flow of our wellsprings.

You know these raging thought patterns vying for rule over our hearts: What If?…Why Not?…Why Me?…I Should Have Said…I Should Have Done…I Can’t Believe I Did That…This Will Never Get Better…I Can’t Forgive That…God Will Never Forgive Me…etc.  These block our wellspring-thinking and the flow of God’s eternal perspective. God’s eternal perspective that declares His promised love and peace, grace and truth.

Guard your heart. Guard your motivations. On this side of Heaven it will be very difficult for our motivations to ever be 100% pure–even when loving and serving others in the name of Jesus and for God’s glory alone. It will be by choosing humility and complete honesty before God that our hearts will be guarded. The continual purification of our motivations will come by inviting God’s love and peace, grace and truth to flow into the deepest recesses of our hearts.

Guard your heart. Guard your actions. Everything. Every word–spoken-written-text-IM’d-blogged, etc. Every look–every way we look at people. Everything we look at. Every touch. Every move. Every facial expression. Every gesture. Everything we do. Every way we do it. Everywhere. Every time. With Every person.

Every action is to be guarded and done as a reflection of who we are–children of the King of kings and Lord of lords. Our actions are to reveal our intimate relationship with Jesus–the Lord of love and peace, grace and truth!

And, Yes. You have heard this truth before: All of this guarding of our hearts--guarding of our emotions, thoughts, motivations and actions–is all about God’s Loving Way for us to experience our fullest life and freedom in Him.

Guarding our hearts does not limit us. No! Keeping our wellsprings well powerfully transforms us–lifting us up, freeing us up–to offer God’s love and peace, grace and truth into the lives of others!

In love, peace and purposeful passion,                                                               Sylane
