Jesus, the Living Word of God, answered the tempter’s every push, plea, pressure and twisted persuasion with the true, eternal Word of God. How much more should we get to know, trust, depend on and live on the grace and truth, the love and power of God’s Word to feed us, lead us and strengthen us every moment of every day of our lives?
Jesus answered, “It is written: Man does not live on bread alone,
but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
We need God to live. Bread is good – even very good (especially warm and fresh from the oven!). But we don’t actually live on bread, or fruits or vegetables or meats or even our favorite comfort foods. At least not in the deepest part of our souls. And certainly not for all eternity. We need God to give us life and sustain our lives. Now and for all eternity. Without God there is no life. As a matter of fact, God’s Word even tells us that:
…the LORD is your life…
Jesus made it clear that our lives depend on every word that comes from the mouth of God. As we get to know, trust and live on God’s Word, our minds and souls will be fed with the absolute assurance that in Christ alone our deepest needs are met – our deepest, most desperate needs – for unfailing love and eternal life with our God!
These truly are what our souls hunger for even if we act, temporarily, as if something less than these will satisfy and fill us. No man-made bread, no man-made pleasure, no man-made success, could ever fulfill the deepest soul needs we each have. No. We live – and live most fully and freely – on God’s Word.
As we live on God’s Word, in our daily-day lives right here and now, our minds and souls will be fed the strength, courage, peace and self-control of Christ that are able empower us to be victorious over the trappings of any and every temptation that comes our way. I know that whenever I give into temptation (darn it!), it is not because of any lack of nourishment or strength that God’s Word provides for me. No, it is because I choose, at those time, not to go back home to my Abba’s table where His living, active and powerful Word is always available to feed and fill me. And had I gone to Abba’s Word Buffet, I would have received all I needed to deal with all of the pushes, pleas, pressures and twisted persuasions that life presents to me.
As we choose to feed on and live on God’s Word we will be shaped by it, just as we are shaped by our physical food. God’s Word will shape and transform each one of us to be more and more like Jesus – more loving, more patient, more forgiving, more humble, more powerful, more kind, more wise.
For myself, I am convinced that God’s Word is absolutely essential for my life and for every aspect of my mental, spiritual, relational and, yes, even for my physical well-being. I must feed on and live on God’s Word in order to truly live – and live fully and freely! Oh! How delicious God’s Word is!
What are you living on?
