Many nations will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. The LORD will teach us His ways, so that we may walk in His paths.
All nations may walk in the name of their gods; we will walk in the name of the LORD. Micah 4:2, 5
Will and May…
When it comes to the truth of what the LORD will do, according to His Word, we can be certain it WILL happen, the LORD WILL do it.
In this passage we have the LORD’s promise that for those who seek God, for those who seek His truth, His wisdom: The LORD WILL teach us His ways.
And then, that word MAY appears: …so that we MAY walk in His paths. This is where certainty…isn’t so certain. Because we people have a choice to make.
We can go to the mountain and the house of the LORD…we can go to church and read our Bible…we can put ourselves in all kinds of places—in counseling, in conferences and retreats, in prayer and in study groups—where the Word of the LORD is taught, presented and explained in its life-saving, life-transforming truth. But we each still have a choice to make.
Will we trust the teachings of the LORD so that we will walk in His paths? Or will we choose to continue walking in pride that is obvious and blatant as seen through sin and selfishness, arrogance and stubbornness? Will we choose to continue walking in fear and shame which are more subtle, yet, still deadly forms of pride because we will not choose to trust that the LORD’s love, grace, truth, and strength are more than enough for us?
Will we choose, whether blatantly or subtly, to walk in the names of other gods…the name of all the other things—including ourselves and our attitudes, actions, abilities, desires and relationships—that we trust more than the LORD? We may do this. All nations…all individuals…may walk in the name of their gods.
We have a choice. The LORD does not make us robots. Even when we put ourselves in all the right places to hear the truth of the LORD’s Word, we sill have choice to make.
When we choose to trust the LORD’s teachings and choose that we WILL walk in the name of the LORD…we WILL know and live out a radical, beautiful and powerful transformation in our lives. Amen!
