There’s a famous (and old!) rock song that the Rolling Stones released in 1965 which echoes the cry of far too many hearts: “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction!”
The truth of that depends on what we are seeking to satisfy us. Stuff never will. People fully can’t. Power, prestige and position just won’t. All are too fragile, too flawed, too fleeting.
And then there’s God. Eternal. Sovereign. Intimate. Faithful. Almighty. Merciful. Loving God.
When what we are seeking is really a WHO, we will know and find our God. We will know and experience His love for us. When we choose to seek God, sincerely and with all our heart, we will be fully and eternally satisfied. We will be filled to over-flowing with what our hearts cry out for most loudly and most desperately: unfailing love.
Satisfy us in the morning with Your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. – Psalm 90:14
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD… – Jeremiah 29:13-14
“Then the maidens will dance and be glad, young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow. I will satisfy the priests with abundance, and my people will be filled with my bounty,” declares the LORD. Jeremiah 31:13-14
Our satisfaction is not, nor can it ever be, found in our circumstances – even the sweetest and best of them. Our true and lasting soul satisfaction is found only in our God, in His unfailing love for us and in His gifts of peace, joy and hope that are fully available to us. Our God wants to fully fill us and freely flow through us so that we and others will know God’s unfailing love – and be satisfied!
May we each choose to turn our eyes and our hearts away from all that is fragile, flawed and fleeting as the source to satisfy our longings. May we, instead, lift our eyes and turn our hearts (over and over and over again!) to the One who loves us more than we could ever begin to imagine – to the One who Is Eternal and satisfies us with His unfailing love! Now that really is worth singing about!
