STIRRED NESTS – GOD’S FLIGHT PLANS

God wants us to trust Him and, like an eagle, learn to fly with Him. Often times, however, we’d rather stay in our nests – in our own comfort zones. We want to maintain and protect our known ways of doing things. It’s just easier that way. Leaving our nests is risky business. Flying is riskier still.

The LORD is…like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them on its pinions.

Deuteronomy 32:11

God stirs up our nests out of His love for us to move us to greater strength, truth and freedom. Just as baby eagles don’t get it when they’re first stirred up and pushed out of their nests, we don’t often realize we were created to soar! And our God hovers over us, catches us and carries us as we learn to match our flight plans to His!

It doesn’t make sense for little eaglets, all comfy, warm and perfectly content to suddenly be stirred up and pushed out of the comfort of their nests. But it is the only way for them to fly and attain the fullness of their created purpose.

For me, it didn’t make sense to forgive the unforgivable and choose to love those who had treated me hatefully. Jesus’ death for the forgiveness of all sins doesn’t make a whole lot of sense either. Yet it is the very wisdom and power of God! God’s soaring proclamation of love!

It didn’t make sense for us to pack up a 2 year old and a 3 month old (born with a hole in her heart) and move to France when we didn’t even speak the language. But God used this non-sensical move to intensify our understanding of God as the God of all creation, all nations and all peoples in deep, lasting and tangible ways. And what fabulous, and sometimes very uncomfortable, adventures we had during this stirred up time! It didn’t make sense to stir up our lives again and move away from our comfortable home, good friends, good schools, established jobs and our loving church family when our girls were teenagers (What!?). But! God’s non-sensical stirrings led to great growth, deeper faith and life paths that none of us could ever have imagined before God’s hard, loving push out of our comfort zones!

God’s stirrings for you may never entail learning a foreign language or changing your address (several times!). God’s Spirit may be urging you to share the love of Jesus with someone in your family, in your neighborhood, at work or school. Maybe God is stirring you to reach out to someone who is lonely or in need – that forgotten grandmother in a nursing home, that little boy who plays outside by himself, that single, tired and frazzled mom, that newly widowed, numbed to the soul man, that living on the edge teenager (who scares you a little bit), that soldier who could use a care package to know someone cares, that friend who just needs a listening heart.

God’s stirrings will come in different ways to each of us as He calls us out of our comfort zones. Leaving the comfort of our nests is risky, I know. But, I am convinced that ignoring the stirrings of God’s heart and will for our lives is far riskier to our well-being and the quality of our lives on every level – mentally, physically, relationally and spiritually. So, fly, Darlin’s, fly! The views and adventures while soaring according to God’s flight plan are spectacular!
