Our hearts are so very important to God. He tells us to make guarding our hearts a top priority. That our hearts are the very wellspring of our lives.
Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. – Proverbs 4:23
If our hearts are this “Above all else” so important to God, then, we need to seriously think about just how seriously we guard them. The word “heart” in Scripture refers to far more than what we often realize. In biblical language our heart is the very center of the human spirit from which all our emotions, thoughts, motivations and actions flow.
God’s Word, God’s loving, wise, holy intention and righteous direction to each of us is to: Guard our hearts. Guard our emotions. Don’t allow frustration, sadness, anger, fear, pride, self-pity, exhaustion, hurt, excitement, boredom, numbness or selfishness in any way have control over our hearts. Rather, we are to seek our God and trust Him to give us the love and peace, grace and truth of Jesus Christ to be the deep, balancing, healing, and transforming power that rules over, and flows through, each of our hearts – the very wellspring of our lives.
Guard our hearts. Guard against allowing our unhealthy emotions and reactive responses to our difficult circumstances to become our patterned thoughts and imprisoning perspectives. These can too easily become raging torrents of twisted thought scenarios played out in our hearts that damage and destroy the life-giving flow of our wellsprings.
Those twisted thought patterns can keep our hearts trapped with: What If I Had?…What If I Had Not?…Why Me?…Why Not Me?…I Should Have Said…I Should Have Done…I Can’t Believe I Did That…I Can’t Believe That Was Done To Me…This Will Never Get Better…I Will Never Get Better…I Can’t Forgive That…God Will Never Forgive Me…and on and on and on. These unhealthy thought patterns and imprisoning perspectives turn our hearts – turn our emotions, thoughts, motivations and actions – away from our God. They block our wellspring-thinking and the flow of God’s eternal perspective that strengthens us, calms us, encourages us and empowers us.
As we choose humility and honesty before God, our hearts will be guarded and our wellsprings made well. May we each choose to guard our hearts. Guard our emotions, thoughts, motivations and actions. Guard every word – spoken, written and thought. Guard every look. Every way we look at others. Everything we look at. Every touch. Every move. Every facial expression. Every gesture. Everything we do. Every way we do it. Everywhere. Every time. With Every person.
From out of our hearts flow the deepest essence of who we are. From out of our hearts all that we think, feel, say and do is formed and expressed. How loving and wise of our God to tell us to guard our hearts above all else! God wants our wellsprings well!
