There are days I can feel pretty powerless. Powerless to make things (even good and right things) happen for my family. Powerless to shield those I love from difficult and painful times. Powerless to accomplish the goals and dreams I have for my life and my work. Powerless to be fully healthy of body, mind and spirit. Powerless to make anyone trust God and follow the life-giving, peace-bringing way of our Lord Jesus. The truth is, in these ways, I am powerless.
Our God has a far different idea of what true power is, and what, through His divine power, He has already made available to us.
God’s divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 2 Peter 1:3
This verse does not say that God’s divine power has given us everything we need for wealth, health, luxury, ease, great influence and getting all our ducks in a row. Oh, no! Our God is more concerned about building our relationship with Him than ensuring our personal comfort, convenience, sense of control or self-sufficiency. Our God is more concerned about all things eternal, and giving us everything we need for what eternally matters: Life and Godliness –
I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent mehas eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. John 5:24
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control…Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. – Galatians 5:22-23, 25
God’s divine power has given everything we need for true Life – a life lived in relationship with our Lord Jesus right now, right in the midst of our messes and masterpieces, and an eternal life with the Master of all Creation! And we have been given everything we need for Godliness – for the complete renewing, healing and transforming of our innermost beings so we will more fully reflect the likeness of our Holy God in whose image we were originally created!
God’s divine power has given us (notice this is already accomplished from God’s perspective!) everything we need for life and godliness! However, it is only received through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. The more fully we get to know our God – through reading and trusting His Living and Active Word and seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance through prayer – the more open we will be to receive everything we need for life and godliness!
Two questions I continually ask myself (and others) when reading or hearing a teaching about God and His Word: Do you believe it? What are you going to do about it?
Do I, do you, believe our God has given us everything we need for life and godliness? Will I, will you, choose to intentionally grow in the knowledge of our God and His Word?
My answer to both questions: Yes! Because I believe knowledge of my God is power – divine power – giving me everything I need in my own most powerless of moments!
What about you: Do you believe it? What are you going to do about it?
