Epitaph – What Would You Want For Yours?

A few weeks ago a Scripture really jumped out at me, and I thought to myself what a great inscription for my epitaph. No, I’m not being morbid – nor am I making an announcement about my impending death. (Although the freedom of living without fear of death because of our Lord Jesus Christ does make dealing with the reality of my future death a whole heck of a lot easier to accept!)

The Scripture for my possible epitaph? (Even though I plan on having my ashes thrown into the ocean!) 1 Corinthians 15:10:

“By the grace of God I am what I am,

and His grace to me was not without effect.”

“By the grace of God I am what I am” – and what I know that I am is:

  • a beloved child of Creator God.
  • so loved that Jesus the Holy Son of God died to forgive my sins.
  • so loved that I have the sure promise of eternal life through the resurrection of Jesus.
  • so loved that I am now called and known to my God as a new creation, holy, dearly loved, without blemish and free of accusation…an ambassador of Christ, a citizen of Heaven, a member of God’s royal priesthood and holy nation. I belong to God.
  • so loved that I am called and transformed to be an oak of righteousness, a planting of the Lord, for the display of His splendor…as I am more and more conformed to be – think, speak, act, interact…live – like Jesus!

“God’s grace to me was not without effect.” This is a deep and all-consuming truth of my life. God’s grace to me has changed everything – the course of my life and the purpose of my life…the freedom of my life and the joy of my life!

So, in my life…or on my epitaph…I want it known – and I want to proclaim:

“By the grace of God I am what I am,

and His grace to me was not without effect.”

How about you? Got Grace? Got Grace Effects? Got an idea for your living epitaph?

In love, peace and purposeful passion, Sylane
