What you heard from me, keep as the pattern for sound teaching, with faith and love in Jesus Christ. 2 Timothy 1:13
The Apostle Paul wrote this very bold suggestion to Timothy (and to others): “What you have heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching…”
Wow. That really is bold. Bold about the certainty of his teaching. Bold that what he has taught is worthy to be held to “as the pattern for sound teaching.”
This bold suggestion could sound arrogant or exclusive. But in his very next words…in his very next breath…Paul makes it clear that his teachings are completely dependent on being in unity with Christ through faith and love.
I need to constantly keep myself aware of how truly dependent I am on Jesus — His Word and His Spirit — for anything I teach in His Name…for anything I suggest “as the pattern of sound teaching” that anyone should keep.
All of us who are believers are called to be ambassadors of Christ. We are all, therefore, in some way teaching others what it looks like to live as a Christian…what the pattern of Christian teaching looks like in our lives. Hmmmmmm?
May we each ask our God to hold us tightly in unity with our Lord Jesus so that the patterns of our lives will reflect our own absolute dependence on our faith and love in Christ! Then, and only in this absolute dependence on Jesus, should we make the bold suggestion for others to “keep as the pattern of sound teaching” anything they have heard…or seen or experienced…from us.
Dependence on Jesus…Boldness for the lives of others…out of faith and love in Christ!
In love, peace and purposeful passion, Sylane
