LIVING THE TRUTH OF PSALM 23 – part 2

As we read reflectively through Psalm 23, I’m asking God to show us what living the truth of His Word means for each of our days. Whether it is a day of sadness, surprises, simplicity or celebration.

The LORD guides me [in paths of righteousness] along the right paths for his name’s sake. – Psalm 23:3

Within these few words there is so much revealed about our Lord – His truth, power and soul-refreshing intimacy and purpose. So, let’s do the rap-thing: Break it down!

Who: The Lord, our Shepherd – the Holy One, the Creator of all that is seen and unseen, the Great One – enters into our world. The Lord, who is beyond our full grasp of understanding, reaches out to us to intervene in our lives. Into our mortal, needy, frail, flawed and finite lives. And the Lord, our Shepherd, comes to us with His unlimited, unfailing love!

What: Guides me. How extravagantly intimate the Holy One, the Sovereign Lord, our Shepherd, is with each of us! Our Shepherd walks with us. Lives with us. Our Shepherd desires to lead us, teach us, nurture us and guide us. If I would take more time to honestly think about and reflect on Who is actually guiding me, instead of asserting my independence (aka: willfulness and stubbornness) to determine my own direction, I would, more often and more immediately, respond with the rightful attitudes of awe, humility and thankfulness. And I would, more often and more immediately, actively and intentionally, seek the Lord, my Shepherd, to guide me every single day. Every single moment. With every single breath.

Where: In paths of righteousness. Our Lord, our Shepherd, guides us (and passionately invites us, but does not force us) to walk on and live on His holy ground – on His paths of righteousness. Yet, too often, we choose to go our own way. And it isn’t pretty. When I choose to stay on my own me-centered path, I am ego-focused. It is then that I lose my focus. It is then that I lose my way. As we choose to walk with our Lord on His paths of righteousness, we will receive the fullness of our Lord’s eternal gifts of life, love, grace, truth, peace and purpose. No matter what temporal obstacles may be in our way.

Why: For His name’s sake. Our Lord, our Shepherd, purposes for each of us to know who He is – who He truly is! Our Lord, our Shepherd, purposes to reveal Himself and His love, salvation, sovereignty, power, intimacy and purpose to the world – to each precious individual ever born to this world. And our Lord, our Shepherd, chooses to use us to reveal Himself to others, as we choose to walk on His paths of righteousness. For His name’s sake!

What an amazing and humbling intimacy we’ve been given with our Lord, our Shepherd, as He guides us! What an amazing and humbling purpose we’ve been given by our Lord, our Shepherd, to share with others about God’s life-guiding, life-transforming love, grace, truth, righteousness, intimacy and purpose that He offers to each and every one of us!

Read, again, today’s verse:

The LORD guides me [in paths of righteousness] along the right paths for his name’s sake. – Psalm 23:3

Let’s take a walk on the Righteous Side with our Lord, our Shepherd!
