LIVING THE TRUTH OF PSALM 23 – part 1

For the next few days, I want us to read, reflectively read, the words of Psalm 23 a few verses at a time. I want God to show us more of what living the truth of His Word via Psalm 23 means. Let’s take this journey together, seeking our Lord, our Shepherd, to lead us.

The LORD is my shepherd, [I shall not be in want] I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he [restores] refreshes my soul. – Psalm 23:1-3

The words from Psalm 23 are some of the most familiar, best-known words from the entire Bible – familiar to believers and not-yet-believers around the world. This Psalm is often read during times of deep crises in our lives or at the bedside of the sick and dying or later read at their funerals. The words of Psalm 23 are powerful and soul-refreshing. And they are true.

These words are just as true, powerful and soul-refreshing during the routine times of our daily-day lives and during those sweet, peaceful periods of time (that really do come from time to time). The words from Psalm 23 are meant to be read and known as true, powerful and soul-refreshing even during our most joyful times of celebration.

Because…

We always need our Lord, our Shepherd. Not just when we are aware of our great need.

We always need our Lord, our Shepherd, to lead us. Not just when we are confused as to where we should go.

We always need our Lord, our Shepherd, to provide for us. Not just when we are insecure about our ability to provide for ourselves.

We always need our Lord, our Shepherd, to show us where and how to rest. Not just when we are burned out and worn down by life.

We always need our Lord, our Shepherd, to lead us to the quiet waters where He restores our souls. Not just when we realize that the flow of life and hope and peace in our inner-most beings is dry and shriveled or bitter and rancid.

Read, again, those first few beginning verses from Psalm 23:

The LORD is my shepherd, [I shall not be in want] I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he [restores] refreshes my soul. – Psalm 23:1-3

Our daily, desperate and, even, delightful need for our Lord, our Shepherd, never changes. Our God never changes. But, oh! Our God wants to change us with His true, powerful and soul-refreshing Word! May God’s truth be lived out in our consciousness, in our choices, and in our ever-growing intimacy with our Shepherd as we allow Him to lead us every moment, every day – whatever our days may bring.
