MAKE A BREAK FOR IT!

Old habits that were part of us before we accepted Jesus as Savior, can still have far too much influence and power over us even now. Jesus may absolutely be our Savior. He intends to be our Lord – by renewing us with His unfailing love, His living truth and His transforming grace.

If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come; the old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God… – 2 Corinthians 5:17-18

Yes, in Christ we are made new! We are signed, sealed, delivered! The condemnation that comes from our sins, Jesus took all upon Himself. We are forgiven! In Christ we are set free from the power of death and given the sure promise of eternal life. Jesus died and rose again! All this, Jesus accomplished in order to give us new life in every area of our lives.

Yet, we wonder where our “newness” is. Our old habits can be so hard to break. Our old habits can still infiltrate everything about our ways of thinking, of perceiving and drawing conclusions about people and circumstances, about God and God’s character. Our old habits can linger in our ways of speaking – the words we choose, the tone we use, the interruptions we make. Our old habits can still spew poison into every possible area of how we behave – in what we do privately when no one else is around or seems to know what we’re doing, in how we act within our families or around our friends, with co-workers or strangers, in formal or informal settings. Our old habits can be our go-to-comfort-mode of thinking, speaking and acting. Our old habits can be (even for those who are fairly mature in their faith journey) our knee-jerk-reaction-mode when people or circumstances are difficult, frustrating, heartbreaking, surprising or unwanted.

Yet, our God declares that the old is gone, the new has come! That all “this new” is from God! Why, then, do we go back to our old habits and their life-twisting, deceptive, destructive, ugly ways? Our old ways do not in any way line up with the truth and freedom that come from our Lord Jesus Christ! Our old habits are deadly, weakening, miserable and enslaving.

…now that you know God – or rather are known by God – how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? – Galatians 4:9

Our God knows us and, as His children by faith, we, too, know our God. We need to choose to hold onto all that we know is true about our Lord. We need to choose to live our lives in the freedom that Jesus’ blood has bought for us.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. – Galatians 5:1

Make a break for it! Break from all those old deadly, weak, miserable and enslaving habits! Break from them by choosing to stand fully in the love, grace, truth, power and freedom that come through, and come from, our Lord Jesus Christ alone!
