WEARING AND WRITING FOR THE LORD

A lot of people, both men and women, wear crosses around their necks. Some of these crosses are simple, some ornate, some delicate, some heavy, some hold deep or sentimental meaning for the wearer. But all of these crosses, whether intentionally done by the wearer or not, point to the place of sacrifice where our Lord Jesus wore and bore the weight of our sins. Jesus wore and bore this weight on the cross so that we may be forgiven and have eternal life.

Other people will have Scripture verses written out in their homes, on stationery, on screen-savers, on bumper stickers, on tee shirts, on key chains and, even, on candy wrappers.

This is all fine and good. And all these wearing and writing ways can absolutely be ways to express our faith. These can be tangible and visible ways for us to live as God’s children and witness to others of our faith in Jesus as Savior and Lord. But! We must be sure that these kind of tangible and visible – wearing and writing – expressions are not the only ways we give witness to the faith we have in Jesus. It must be through our thoughts, words, actions and reactions – through our everyday lives every day – that we truly wear and write out our testimony to our Holy God.

Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. – Proverbs 3:3

What are you – what am I – wearing and writing for the Lord?

Do people see that I’m wearing love and faithfulness as my permanent attire? Or are love and faithfulness just part of my accessories – like a belt or a tie, like cufflinks or a pocket square, like heels or a purse, like a necklace or earrings? Do I change up my love and faithfulness – the amount I show and the amount I wear – depending on where I am, whom I’m with and what I’m doing?

Are love and faithfulness so deeply written on my heart that my very life is keeping the rhythm and pace of love and faithfulness with each thought I have, with each word I speak, with each action I choose? Or does the beat of my heart easily change when I’m tired and frustrated, self-focused and busy? Does my heart beat instead, and far too often, with the rhythm and pace of anger and judgment, dismissal and criticism, pride and selfishness?

Will I choose to wear God’s love and faithfulness more consistently? Will wearing active and authentic love and faithfulness – living out my faith in God in very real ways – ever become as sweetly comfortable and natural as wearing my favorite sweatshirt?

Will I let God’s love and faithfulness be fully written on my heart and fully engraved into the very core of my being? So much so that people would be able to read my life – my words, my actions and my reactions – as a love letter from God to them?

May we each choose to wear and write, in all their fullness, the love and faithfulness of our Lord Jesus Christ – through our everyday lives every day!
