ONE GIANT LEAP FOR EVERY ONE OF US

Do you remember where you were on July 20, 1969? Maybe you don’t. But I do. This was the day Apollo 11 landed on the moon. And I, along with countless Americans and many others around the world, watched this out-of-our-world experience while glued to my television set. As Walter Cronkite brought us the news of this amazing, unfathomable feat made possible by a driven passion, a strong competitive streak and scientific knowledge, we celebrated and marveled at the success of this magnificent step that humans had taken!

Neil Armstrong, the first man to ever walk on the moon, uttered his now world famous words when taking his first step on the Lunar surface, “That’s one small step for man – one giant leap for mankind.”

In honor of Apollo 11’s anniversary, these words are being reiterated on every news source available – TV, radio, newspapers, magazines and via incalculable cyberspace communication sources never even imagined back in 1969 by the brilliant scientists who made this adventure on the moon possible.

God not only imagined this amazing feat by men and women of science and courage, God gave them and us – the people created by His love and will – the intellect, the insight and the ability to do many, amazingly great things!

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.    – Proverbs 16:9

God Himself, as the Lord of all creation, has given us our very life, our very breath and every ability to think, plan, attempt and accomplish any and everything we do. Oh, that we all would, as individuals and as people of the earth, plan our course and choose our steps to do great things – in small ways and in big ways – to care for other people and for the good of our world!

Think about where and how you’re walking today. Think about what steps you are taking as you journey through your life. Think about what steps you are taking as your life intertwines with others. Will your steps reflect and use – well, wisely and generously – the life, the breath, the intellect, the insight and the ability to do amazing things that God has given to you? Or will your steps crush the spirits, hopes and dreams of someone else around you – maybe even the littlest ones around you? Will you step on somebody’s toes by thoughtless words and actions? Will your steps put your foot in your own mouth? Will your steps take you into places of shameful and sinful thoughts, words and actions?

Our God has given us every ability to plan our course. Yet, our God alone holds and reserves the sovereign authority to determine our steps, and which of our steps will be of eternal value. As we acknowledge our Holy God as our life-giver, may each of us choose to walk closely with Him, in each of our steps.

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:25

Let’s each think honestly and carefully about our steps and the impact they have for our own lives and for the lives of every person into whose life we step. May we each choose to walk in God’s loving, good ways! That would be a giant leap for each and every one of us!
