Do you remember Grover, that cute and furry monster from Sesame Street? He often taught about prepositions of location. What? You know, words like: over, under, near, far!
These words have great power to help us know where things are. They change our whole understanding of where something or someone is actually positioned. They’re basically our linguistic GPS.
The words Near and Far have especially powerful, eternal life consequences when it comes to us and our Lord. Throughout Scripture, our God is calling out to us: Come near to Me. Come know My love for you. Come listen to Me. Come put your faith in Me. Come trust in Me. Come near to Me now. Come be with Me forever.
Just as Grover encouraged the little children to run up to the television screen in order to come near, so we must run into the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ in order to come near to our Heavenly Father, our Holy Abba.
Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you. But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of your deeds. – Psalm 73:27-28
Jesus said to them, “Let the little children come [near] to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” – Mark 10:14-15
Come near to God and he will come near to you. – James 4:8
Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon. – Isaiah 55:6-7
Come on, let’s run near to our Lord! Let’s come near to our God in faith and receive His promised love and mercy! Let’s come near to our Lord and stay in His presence! Our Lord is near, and always has been, waiting with outstretched, loving arms. The very same arms that were once stretched out on a cross for us, in the fullness of His love as He came near to us.
Our God is very near. He is Immanuel – God with us. May we each turn to God and choose to be very near to Him. It is good to be near God! Really good! Now and for all eternity!
