WORDS TO TAKE TO HEART

In our corner of the world, we have such accessibility to the Bible. It’s very easy to forget that there are many Christian sisters and brothers around the world who are desperate to own a Bible. Who are desperate to be able to freely read and openly study the Scriptures without fear of persecution or prosecution. There are, also, still so many others throughout our world who do not yet know and have never read for themselves about the grace and truth of God that is found in the Bible – the written, inspired, teaching, correcting, encouraging, transforming Word of our Living God. God’s words that are our life.

Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day…They are not just idle words for you – they are your life. – Deuteronomy 32:46-47

I have to admit that I take my easy access to the Bible for granted way too often. Just as I do the air I breathe, the food I eat, the water I drink. Even though I desperately need each of these to live. It is the same with God’s words. We are not to take any of God’s words for granted. Rather, we are to take all of God’s words to heart. Because they are our life.

God’s words are not idle – like a vehicle going nowhere, just sitting, running its engine, with no movement, and just getting emptier and emptier of its source of power. No! God’s words are living, active, powerful and purposeful. And they are to be taken to heart – taken to the very core of our innermost being – so that God’s words may give each of us all the power we need to live. Truly live.

Here are just a very few of God’s life-giving words that we so desperately need in our lives:

We need love. God is love. – 1 John 4:8, 16

We need unfailing love. – Exodus 15:13, Romans 8:37-39

We need to love God and others and ourselves. – Deuteronomy 6:4-5; Leviticus 19:18;

Mark 12:30-31; Matthew 22:37-39; Luke 10:27

We need hope. God is our hope. – Psalm 25:5; Romans 15:13

We need to put our hope in God’s word. – Psalm 119:24, Proverbs 3:5-6

We need peace. God is the Prince of Peace. – Isaiah 9:6, Isaiah 53:5, John 16:33

We need peace beyond our understanding. – Philippians 4:7

We need forgiveness. God offers forgiveness. – Psalm 130:4; Acts 2:38; 1 John 1:8-9

We need eternal salvation, fully and only given by our Holy God through our Lord Jesus – Psalm 62:7; John 3:16-18; Acts 4:12; Romans 1:16; Romans 3:22-26; Ephesians 2:8-9; Philippians 2:5-11

We need life. The Lord is our life. – Deuteronomy 30:19-20; John 10:10; John 11:25;

John 14:6; Romans 8:6; 2 Peter 1:3

No, God’s words are not idle. They are powerful, saving, healing, filling, freeing, purposeful. God’s words are our very life. Never to be taken for granted.

May each one of us choose to get to know God’s words and take them to heart – in every area, in every relationship, in every circumstance and in every moment of our lives. May each of us also choose to share God’s words of life more freely, lovingly and courageously with those whose hearts have not yet taken them in.
