A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit. Proverbs 15:13
We need to lighten up a bit! God wants to shine His light in us and through us spiritually and physically!
I know there is heartache in our world, in our own personal lives and in each one of us personally – in some way, to some extent. Some of the heartache we experience is absolutely overwhelming and life-crushing. Some of the heartache is unavoidable and inescapable – as it comes at us by the cruelty of others, or by the death of our loved ones, or by the havoc wreaked by natural disasters. Some of the heartache comes directly as a consequence of our own personal decisions, words and actions. All of this heartache is unwanted. Yet, this is what comes from the truth that we are living in a broken and imperfect world. This is what comes from living as a broken and imperfect person.
But heartache does not have to rule us! Jesus offers us His peace and declares that He has overcome the world! Jesus has overcome – by His love, by His sacrifice, by His resurrection – all the power of everything that would crush our peace and break our hearts.
“I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33
Our God is with us. Always.
Our God loves us. Unfailingly.
Our God pours the fruit of His Spirit into our lives with its power to heal every heartache that comes against us. And as we feed on the fruit the Spirit provides, we will have more power to walk away from every temptation that would cause heartache to ourselves and to the other people in our lives.
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. …Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23, 25
We need to lighten up a bit! We need to let all of the Spirit’s fruit fill our hearts to overflowing. Filling our hearts so much that our faces cannot help but be happy. We need to let all of the Spirit’s fruit flow so freely through us to others, that they cannot keep themselves from smiling. And, if only for just a few moments, the heartache that would crush our spirits has been crushed by the light in our eyes and the smiles on our faces! And in those few moments, God’s love and joy and peace have, once again, declared the truth that Jesus has overcome the world! Because of all that Jesus has done on our behalf, let’s be who He declares us to be – in our lives, in our attitudes, and even on our faces!
“You are the light of the world.” – Matthew 5:14
So, let’s lighten up!
