WILL AND MAY – THE LORD’S TRUTH, OUR CHOICE

Many nations will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths. All the nations may walk in the name of their gods, but we will walk in the name of the LORD.” – Micah 4:2, 5

Will and May…

When it comes to the truth of what the Lord will do, according to His Word, we can be certain it will happen. The Lord will do it. In this passage we have the Lord’s promise that for those who seek God, for those who seek His truth and His wisdom: The Lord will teach us His ways.

And then, that word “may” appears: …so that we may walk in His paths. This is where certainty isn’t so certain. Because this is where we people have a choice to make.

We can go up to the mountain and the house of the Lord. We can go to church and read our Bibles. We can put ourselves in all kinds of places – in Christian counseling, in Christ-focused conferences and retreats, in Jesus-honoring prayer and study groups – where the Word of the Lord is taught, presented, honored, and explained in its amazing and powerful life-saving, life-transforming truth. But each one of us still has a choice to make.

Will we trust and believe the teachings of the Lord so that we will walk in His paths? Or will we choose to continue walking in our own paths that can too often be oblivious to God’s will or too filled with our own prideful ways and self-focused plans? Will we choose to continue walking in our own paths filled with fear and shame – sometimes more subtle, yet, still deadly forms of pride – because we will not choose to trust and believe that our Lord’s love, grace, truth, forgiveness, and strength are more than enough for us?

Will we choose, whether blatantly or subtly, to walk in the names of other gods? Will we choose to walk in the name of any other thing – including ourselves, our attitudes, actions, abilities, desires and other relationships – that we trust more than the Lord? We may do this. All nations – all individuals – may walk in the name of their gods.

We have a choice. The Lord doesn’t make us robots. The Lord doesn’t force us to follow His teachings or walk in His paths. Our Lord desires to be in an authentic, loving, and intimate relationship with us. And that can’t be forced. The Lord doesn’t want us to walk in His paths out of some kind of superficial, religious-duty obligation we have imposed on ourselves. That path really wouldn’t be the Lord’s. So, even when we put ourselves in all the right places to hear the truth of the Lord’s Word, we still have a choice to make.

We still have to choose, intentionally and actively, to respond to our Lord’s love and leadership in our lives. And we can absolutely trust that when we do, our Lord will teach us His ways and walk with us on His paths! May each of us choose to follow our Lord’s teachings and paths so that we will live out a radical, beautiful and powerful transformation in our lives – all accomplished through an authentic, loving and intimate relationship with our holy Lord! What a great choice to make!
