SOUL FOOD

Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?” “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.” – John 4:31-34

We are physical people, absolutely. We need physical food from this earth’s resources to feed us, nourish us, grow us, strengthen us, keep us going and keep us alive. No question. No doubt. For many of us, we also have special meals and delicious, favorite foods – our go-to-comfort foods – that feed something deep within us.

Jesus felt hunger just as we do. His disciples cared about Him and His well-being. They were worried that Jesus hadn’t eaten anything recently or, at least, hadn’t eaten enough. Yet, Jesus was still going strong in ministering to the needy ones around Him. And He let his beloved disciples know that He had something more nourishing than physical food and even more delicious than comfort food. Jesus was being filled directly by His Abba. Jesus was being fed through the communion and the commitment of being in continual communication with His Abba and willingly, happily, and thankfully doing Abba’s kingdom work here on earth. Jesus was being fed and filled with the richest, most satisfying, eternally significant soul food.

What’s your soul food source?

Where am I, where are you, getting the deepest nourishment for our souls? Where do we find the source of our energy? Our strength? Our refreshment? Our purpose?

Jesus got His soul food from His Abba – from knowing and doing His Abba’s will. Jesus was in constant intimate communication with His Abba. This communion and connection gave Jesus the full knowledge of His Abba’s will and the desire to lovingly obey Him. Here, in this very intimate relationship with His Abba, Jesus continually received His energy, His strength, His refreshment and His glorious, eternal purpose for all He was called to do in this life. Here, in this very intimate relationship with His Abba, Jesus was filled beyond our comprehension with His Abba’s soul food!

Since all of us, as God’s children, are to become more and more like Jesus, I’m thinking we need to be sure we go to and receive from the same soul food source as Jesus did. We need to be in the same kind of continual communion and communication with our Holy Abba. Like Jesus, we need to commit to knowing and doing our Heavenly Father’s will – and do it willingly, happily and thankfully! Ahhhhh…soul food.

Yes, let’s take care of our bodies. Let’s eat the physical food that will feed us, nourish us, grow us, strengthen us, keep us going and keep us alive. Let’s give thanks for all that our Lord and Creator has provided for our physical needs…and even for our comfort.

And let’s each always seek to be continually filled with our Abba’s soul food! It’s delicious!
