Happy Bastille Day! C’est le quatorze juillet. (It’s the 14th of July!) One of the major national holidays of France. It may not make a bit of difference in your life. And that’s okay. I’m planning to start my day with some good strong French-pressed coffee and at least one pain au chocolat (chocolate croissant). We had lived in France for two years, and I feel it’s only right that I should join in the celebration! Actually, I’ll use any excuse to drink great coffee and eat chocolate croissants!
On the more historically relevant and serious side, Bastille Day, as is our own Independence Day, is a time when we recognize and honor the courageous people who were willing to turn their countries upside-down and sacrifice their own lives in order to turn the rule of justice upside-right. These days are celebrated with songs, parades and all kinds of fanfare.
We people still don’t have the whole ruling justly thing down perfectly. Not by a long shot.
But our God does! And God’s just rule guides us in holy and righteous ways! This is something for all of us – for all peoples of every nation – to celebrate and sing about!
May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you. May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth! – Psalm 67:3-4
Let us thank God for His just rule and guidance that is available to each of us, even now, as individuals, as groups and as whole nations. Let us trust in God’s just rule and guidance always. Especially in these current days when we are so keenly aware of the many and evil injustices done in this dark world. Injustices done by individuals against individuals, groups against groups and nations against nations.
May each of us seek to follow God’s just rule and guidance in our everyday lives. May we each yield to God’s love and choose to be vessels of His justice and peace. Even with people and in places where it may seem impossible.
Blessed are those who act justly, who always do what is right. – Psalm 106:3
If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Romans 12:18
No matter what is happening in our personal or global worlds, we can and should thank our Sovereign Lord always because He promises to make known His just rule and guidance in all their fullness as we join Him in His Eternal Kingdom! Eternity starts now.
So! Be glad and sing for joy, and maybe even eat a chocolate croissant or two just to add to the celebration of God’s unshakable, eternal, just rule and guidance!
In the love and peace, grace and truth of Jesus Christ, Sylane
