When I was a little girl, I spent a lot of time curled up, hiding in the upper shelf of a closet. I didn’t want to be found. I didn’t want to be hurt or touched any more by any one. To my little kid thinking, that closet seemed liked a really good idea, with me curled up into the tightest, tiniest ball I could possibly force my body. But the security of that hiding place was an illusion and temporary. I still remember the day when my hiding place was taken away from me. And I was, once again, taken by the abuse that crushed my innocence.
That self-made hiding place was not sufficient for my safety or my freedom. God alone is.
Any and all other security measures we take to hide us away from the very real, heartbreaking problems and pain of this world are just illusions and temporary. All the things we, in our own strength, put in place to give us a sense of ultimate protection and a secure hiding place away from hard times – whether physical, material, financial, intellectual, professional or relational security measures – are still just illusions and temporary. Helpful, sure. Practical, yes. Wise, absolutely. Yet, like my closet, these earthly hiding places are unable to entirely and eternally protect us when the brokenness of this world rears its ugly head.
Ahhhhh! But our God does things in such a much bigger way than we could ever even begin to imagine! Even when our self-determined security systems, our protective plans and our human-made hiding places fail, our God never will. Even in the midst of our most massive mess-up, our deepest sorrow, our sudden shock or ongoing pain, our God Himself is our hiding place. And God is True and Eternal.
You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. – Psalm 32:7
God Himself is our hiding place. But not by hiding us away from the problems that are part of this broken world. No! God Himself is our hiding place in the midst of all our trouble. Protecting us with His eternal love from which we can never be separated. Filling us with His eternal peace that transcends all understanding. Revealing His eternal perspective that shatters all the lies of all illusions and temporary security. God Himself is our hiding place right in the center of every crisis, cruelty and confusion we experience. God Himself is our hiding place – the eternal calm that exists in the midst of life’s storms that whirl and whip us around here on earth. And there, as our hiding place, our God surrounds us with His sweet and powerful songs of deliverance that flood our inner-most being – reminding us who our God is and renewing our trust in God’s love and His absolute victory over all the power of sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ!
There, hidden in our God, surrounded by His love, listening to His Spirit sing over us, our own songs of trust and thanksgiving begin to pour out to our God for the mighty hiding place He is!
In the love and peace, grace and truth of Jesus Christ, Sylane
