What does real love look like? God is passionate and purposeful in making that very clear to us. Our God gives us a very comprehensive overview of His view of love.
Love is patient, Love is kind.
Love does not envy,
Love does not boast, Love is not proud.
Love does not dishonor others [Love is not rude],
Love is not self-seeking,
Love is not easily angered,
Love keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
Love always protects, Love always trusts,
Love always hopes, Love always perseveres.
Love never fails.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8
This beautiful passage has been quoted by many, many people over the years, by believers and by not-yet-believers, as a moving description of the deepest essence and fullest expression of love. This is what love is. This is what love looks like. But not always what our love looks like.
This is what God’s love looks like. This is how God loves us. Recognize this truth first. This is how God loves us. Let this powerful, life-changing truth of the unfailing love God has for us completely renew and fill, heal and transform our minds, our hearts, our souls, our spirits.
God wants His children to know the depths of His love for us. And as we grasp this truth more fully, we will be more and more conformed to the likeness of Jesus. God’s plan is to transform us within our deepest core so that we will know His love for us and love others the way He loves them and us.
We need to let God change us. Deeply and daily. We need to actively and intentionally make choices in our words and actions that are truly lined up with, and empowered by, God’s transforming love.
In these few short verses, God has given us the characteristics of His love, the actions of His love and the promises of His love. And God promises to empower each of us, His children, with the full measure of His unfailing love.
Read this passage again – God’s overview of what love is. Get a good view of what God’s love for you – what God’s love for each of us – looks like. And what we will look like…and speak like…and act like…as we love others more and more the way our God loves them and our God loves us.
