We all want to belong. We all want to be loved.
We want to belong to something bigger than ourselves where we are truly loved, deeply understood and fully accepted. We want to belong where we are completely loved, sincerely respected and intimately known and, therefore, safe enough to be lovingly and truthfully corrected and guided. We want to belong where our mistakes and our sins will be fully forgiven and never used against us, because we are so deeply loved.
Yet, in all these ways, at some level, all people fail us. Families fail us. Friends fail us. The faithful fail us. We fail all others and, even, ourselves.
This sense of true belonging – of being truly, perfectly, completely loved – is offered only from our Eternal Abba, who has compellingly revealed His unfailing, incomprehensible love for us through the sacrifice and resurrection of His Son, our Savior Jesus Christ – to whom, by faith, we belong forever!
For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name! I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:14-19
We belong! Our Holy Abba, our Eternal Father has claimed us fully as His own through the sacrifice of His beloved Son Jesus. We belong to God. We’re part of His family. Just think about that. We are God’s chosen and outrageously loved children, belonging together with all of the Lord’s holy people, for all eternity!
We are loved! We are loved by our Holy God with a love that is wider and longer, higher and deeper and more powerful than we will ever fully be able to grasp on this side of heaven! We are loved by our God with a love that surpasses all knowledge and fills us with the very Spirit and nature of our Heavenly Abba, our God who is love!
May each of us choose to trust and live in these freeing and empowering truths: That we are unfailingly loved by our God! That we belong, now and forever, to God’s family!
And because of these transforming truths, may each of us choose to actively and intentionally offer Christ’s love more fully, more quickly, more continually, more compassionately and more mercifully to all those around us. To all those precious ones who desperately desire to belong and be loved. Just like us.
