When worried, frustrated, stressed to the max or feeling out of control, many of us run around like crazy or, at the very least, let our minds run around in crazy circles trying to figure out all the things we need to do to put some semblance of order back into our lives. We can spend countless moments (hours, days) worrying about all of the what ifs of every possible scenario.
I call this the Hamster Dance. We allow our worried, frustrated and stressed-out thinking to run us ragged, just as hamsters do when they run around furiously in their little caged wheel. Never going anywhere.
We need to step back and look at what all that crazy worry has done for us: Pretty much nothing! Except for maybe giving us some restless nights, ulcers, headaches, stiff necks and short nails. We need to admit that all the energy we pour into our crazy, worry-filled thoughts resolves absolutely nothing. Gets us absolutely nowhere. Just like that stupid, constantly spinning, held-in-one-place Hamster Dance wheel.
If we would each choose to seek God with that same energy and passion we put into our insane Hamster Dance thinking, our God could quiet our souls with His presence and reassure us that He knows exactly what’s going on in our lives and that He does have plans for us. And they are good. Even in the midst of our most difficult and confusing circumstances, God is still God. God is still in control. God is still with us. We just need to be a bit more still before God.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11
“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” The LORD Almighty is with us, the God of Jacob is our fortress. – Psalm 46:10-11
Stop the Hamster Dance! Take a deep breath. No matter what the circumstances of our lives are, we need to stop the Hamster Dance of worry (of anger, of bitterness, of pride…). We each need to choose and choose and choose to keep on trusting God.
Trust that God knows all you are experiencing. He does. Trust that God loves you. He does. Trust that God intends good for you. He does. Trust that God is a Truth Teller. He is.
Stop the Hamster Dance! Let’s intentionally choose to change our thinking to trust God and His truths more than all those crazy scenarios we let run through our heads. Instead, let’s continually choose to “keep in step with the Spirit” (Galatians 5:25), which, unlike the Hamster Dance, moves us forward by God’s rhythm and pace of love, hope and peace. That’s the dance, with God in the lead, that I want to dance every day of my life!
