“You are the salt of the earth…you are the light of the world.”
Matthew 5:13, 14
Jesus tells us that we as His followers are called to be the salt of the earth. We are called to be the light of the world. That is quite a formidable job description!
The value of salt cannot be overstated. Salt is used widely, and in almost every culture around the world, as a flavoring for so very much of what would nourish us and satisfy our taste buds. Salt is used as a preservative, as a cleanser, and in various medicinal, healing and rejuvenating ways for our bodies.
The value of light is beyond our full comprehension! We have no power on our own to see anything at all unless there is light. Even the tiniest of flame or ray of light is necessary to reveal the size, shape, substance and shades of color of everything that exists. Only in the light is there any vision in our lives.
And Jesus calls us, you and me, the salt of the earth and the light of the world. I am so deeply humbled (and just a little bit terrified!) by this call when I think about what that really means as a follower of Jesus. Do you and I live and act as His salt and light to those around us?
As the salt of the earth –
Do our words and actions help to preserve and protect God’s image as reflected through us? Do our words and actions help to preserve and protect the dignity of those around us who are also made in the image of God?
Do our words and actions leave people with a good and flavorful “taste in their mouths” about who Jesus is? Or do our words and actions leave people with a sour, bitter or bland taste?
Do our words and actions encourage others to “taste and see that the Lord is good?”
Do our words and actions leave people hungering and thirsting for more and more of Jesus?
Do our words and actions bring gentle cleansing, deep healing and rejuvenation to others?
As the light of the world –
Do our words and actions reveal and shed light on the love – the unfailing, faithful, passionate, grace-filled, forgiving, transforming love – of God for all people?
Do our words and actions reveal and shed light on the darkness and evil that work to destroy our lives here on earth and for all eternity?
Do our words and actions reveal and shed light on Jesus as the Way out of this darkness?
Do our words and actions reveal and shed light on an attitude of thanksgiving, humility and joy for all that Jesus is and what He has done as the Savior of the world – as our Savior?
Do our words and actions point the spotlight on Jesus as King of kings and Lord of lords? Or do we attempt to grab the spotlight and get the close-up shots?
May God transform each of us to be His pure salt and true light to everyone with whom we interact – in every relationship, in every circumstance, and even in the briefest encounters we have with others. May God teach us and shape us to be His preserving, protecting, healing, rejuvenating, revealing, brilliant vessels – all for His glory and the salvation and transformation of many, many lives through the love and power of our Lord Jesus Christ! Amen!
In love, peace and purposeful passion,
