Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain.
Unless the LORD watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.
Unless the Lord…
This is quite a phrase – a challenging, in-my-face phrase. And it makes me stop and think.
Unless the Lord is the builder and protector, anything and everything I do – everything each of us does – is actually in vain. It is all just temporal and, eventually, will prove to be completely unimportant and irrelevant, if not downright foolish, in the grand scheme of eternity.
Unless the Lord is the builder and protector of our lives, we live our lives in vain.
I don’t want to do that! I want my life to count for something. Something that counts in God’s eternity, even in the smallest way. Something that counts in the lives of others, even in the smallest way. And, yet, there it is, challenging and in-my-face: Unless the Lord…it is all in vain.
And this is true for everything we do and every relationship we have. This is true for any place, any position, any perspective and any person we put our hearts, minds, energy, gifts, time, talents and finances into without the Lord being the builder and protector. Unless the Lord is the builder and protector of all that we do and every relationship that we have, they will always be desperately lacking in the eternal love, grace, truth and value that only the Lord can give.
Without the Lord being the builder and protector of our lives, of all we do and the relationships we have, we will either be experiencing a disconnect with our God at some level in our spirits or we may, even now, be well on our way towards a major demolition project. And our lives, our efforts and our relationships will need to be overhauled in small and big ways, in tangible and deep ways by our Lord – the builder and protector of all that is of eternal value.
With the Lord as the builder and protector of our lives, of all we do and the relationships we have, we will be filled with God’s good assurance that nothing is in vain!
My dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you.
Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord,
because you know that your labor
[your life, your efforts, your relationships] in the Lord is not in vain.
1 Corinthians 15:58
In the Lord, our lives, our efforts and our relationships will be infused with an indestructible joy, peace, purpose, hope and strength. They will be held in the love, grace, truth and eternal value with which our Lord has built them, and by which our Lord protects them.
Is the Lord the builder and protector of your life? Of all of your life?
Of all that you do?
Of all of your relationships?
May we each invite the Lord to be so, so that we may live in the joy of knowing that who we are and what we do is held in God’s good, loving and eternal hands with great eternal value!
In love, peace and purposeful passion,
