BEAUTIFUL IN GOD’S SIGHT – A GLIMPSE OF GOD’S GREATNESS

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment,

such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.

Rather, it should be that of your inner self,

the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit,

which is of great worth in God’s sight.

1 Peter 3:3-4

Our God is not telling women (I, being one of them!), or men for that matter, not to take care of our outward beauty. Our God made us with a heart that seeks and enjoys beauty and loves to be beautiful. This inner wiring in us is reflective of our God’s heart and mind, of each of us being made in the image and likeness of our God. God Himself takes great pleasure in creating and displaying beauty. Just look around you at the wonders of nature – from the tiniest of flowers to the majesty of the greatest mountains to the unfathomable depth of the seas to the incomprehensible expanse of the stars and galaxies that make up our universe.

Our God is the designer and revealer of amazing, stunning and breath-taking beauty that moves us to get a glimpse of His greatness. And that is exactly what our own personal beauty should be all about. Our beauty should give all others with whom we interact in any way at any time a glimpse of the greatness of God. Even if they never actually see us.

Good feature-accentuating make-up, lovely jewelry, good hair days, flattering clothing, hip shoes and matching accessories are not bad in and of themselves in any way at any time. But, they just don’t, nor can they ever, add any value in any way, now or in the grand scheme of eternity, to our true beauty – to how beautiful we truly are as women of God.

When it comes to our own beauty, God wants to encourage each of us to keep as our deepest concern and first priority: that people will see – in us, from us and through us – the true and transforming beauty that comes only from an intimate relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. Our beauty, and confidence in our beauty, should flow from – and touch others with – the beautiful and eternal knowledge that we are loved unconditionally by the Lord Most High.

And as our true beauty – our inner self – is transformed more and more into the beautiful image and likeness of Jesus, there will be a grounding and a deepening of our souls, expressed and revealed in a gentle and quiet spirit that trusts our God in and for all things. As women, as followers of Jesus, we will increasingly exude a beauty that comes from the confidence of who we are in Him – without any need to be perfectly coiffed and fashionably clothed. By the Spirit of Christ shaping our beauty, we will have no need to be aggressive or showy or loud or point attention to ourselves. Our beauty will point instead to the eternal and majestic beauty of the Lord. And those around us will get a glimpse of our God’s greatness.

In quietness and gentleness of spirit Jesus came to us. In confidence of who He was and the value of His life, Jesus fully trusted His God and Father to fully reveal His eternal beauty as Son of the Lord Most High. And God did this through His unfailing love and sovereign power.

May each of us – women and men alike – fully trust our God for who we are, for the value of our lives and for the beauty that fills us as children of the Living God. May our Lord use each of us, with the beautiful Spirit of Jesus within us, to give others a glimpse of God’s greatness!

In love, peace and purposeful passion,

Sylane
